Menntaskólinn að Laugarvatni
Menntaskólinn að Laugarvatni, founded on the 12th of April 1953, is the third oldest upper secondary school in Iceland. The schools campus is located at Laugarvatn with almost all of our students living on campus and dining in our canteen. The school is organised on the basis of a ‘form’ system with all students who are in the same form sharing the same timetable. Students are between the ages of 16 – 19 years old and primarily come from the southern region of Iceland.
The school operates two academic programs: the Natural Science Program and Social and Humanities Program. These programs take three years, on average, to complete and our students graduate with the Icelandic ‘stúdentspróf’ (matriculation exam).
The school´s watchwords are Human – Knowledge – Enterprise and our teaching and education reflect this vision.
The campus, our form system and the student count (approximately 150 students) guarantee a strong connection between students and staff. Interactions are professional, personal and intimate; the atmosphere at our school is very familiar. Lifelong friendships are often formed during a student’s stay at Menntaskólinn að Laugarvatni (ML). Here at ML we understand that there are many things that can be learned outside of the traditional learning environment and this is reflected in our diverse but intensive list of extracurricular activities; i.e. the school’s dynamic choir.
Laugarvatn is a popular tourist attraction located approximately 70 km from the capital of Reykjavík and 40 km from nearby Selfoss. Sports facilities at Laugarvatn are excellent, which contribute to the schools unique position. We encourage outdoor activities which in-turn promotes a healthy lifestyles, team building and ensures valued student participation.
